ASME does not outline this, whereas some British standards, such as "BS 4515:2009," require 4 times the wall thickness of the thinner part to be joined.

ARAMCO says in "SAES W11" spacing shall be 3x wall thickness or 20mm, whichever is greater.

If you're working on a project, double-check the specifications or applicable code. If you're preparing for an interview, remember both.
