 QW-122 – Pipe Welding Positions. QW-122 defines the pipe welding positions used for qualification.

Purpose of this clause: This paragraph only defines the welding positions used in qualification. It does not state that a separate 

WPS is required for each position.

QW-303 – Limits of qualified positions and diameters. 

QW-303.1 – Groove welds states that a welder or welding operator who passes a groove weld qualification test is qualified for 

the groove weld, fillet weld, and tack weld positions within the limits shown in Table QW-461.9.

The important point is that position qualification belongs to the welder, not to the WPS.

QW-461.9 – Performance qualification position limits.

This table gives the qualification ranges.

For groove welds on pipe:

1G qualifies for the 1G position only

 

2G qualifies for 2G & 1G

5G qualifies for 5G & 1G

6G qualifies for all positions (1G, 2G, 5G & 6G).

QW-202 – WPS Qualification

QW-202 explains the scope of procedure qualification. The essential variables for a WPS are listed in Articles 

QW-250 through QW-290 for each welding process. There is no essential variable requiring requalification of the WPS when 

only the welding position changes.

Your query: "Can he rotate the pipe during production welding when the welder’s WPQ is 6G?"

1G-Pipe (also known as 1GR, where R is used mostly for training purposes in the rolled position): The pipe is positioned with its 

longitudinal axis horizontal and rotated about this axis during welding. The welding is performed from the top, so the weld remains. 

in the flat position.

In the 1G rolled position, welding is carried out from the 11 o’clock position to the 1 o’clock position, with the weld remaining in the 

flat position. Thus, 1G is mainly used for shop fabrication, where rollers or a positioner can rotate the pipe. The welder can remain 

in a comfortable working position while the pipe rotates.

Hence, welding carried out in the 6G position qualifies in 1G (1GR), 2G, 5G & 6G positions.

He can weld in all positions as he is qualified for 6G. If it is shop Weld you can rotate the pipe. I hope when its field weld you may not have that option.
