Re: [MW:34719] After Stabilize Heat treatment of 347H weld material Linear indication observed

Dear sir ,

Thanks for your inputs.

For your information, We have already done repair as mentioned you above (with Control parameter & with Convex weld Bead to avoid stress concentration) & perform LPWHT (Stabilize Heat treatment ) with control cooling but this time indication come from old weld metal (where indication not observed after first PWHT).What is factor affecting this ?

Is there any effect on material Properties (SA 358 Cl.1 /SA 182 F 347H) after multiple heat treatment ( Stabilize Heat Treatment)? if so,than how do we ensure effect after multiple Heat treatment ?

Can you please forward API -TR-942B if you have ??

On Thu, Dec 28, 2023 at 5:54 PM P Goswami <pgoswami@rogers.com> wrote:

Hi Jenish,

Typically, any weldolet welding involves, high volume of weld metal and high residual stress.  SS 347H is prone to "Stress Relaxation Cracking" if the welding parameters, weld ferrite,  welding consumable chemistry (C:Nb ratio)is not controlled & more..

Do a detailed inspection for the root cause. If the indications are due to common welding technique related, such as "LOF", then the solutions are easy. If these are cracks after Stabilizing HT then the above mentioned cracking is one of the root cause/s. One has to carefully grind and weld repair. Smaller areas may be repaired by "Controlled Deposition Technique".

You may find more resources in API -TR-942B.

Thanks.

[MW:34712] Interpass Temperture - Reg

Dear Gents,

In ASME SEC IX, QW 406.3 States " An increase of more than 100°F (55°C) in
the maximum interpass temperature recorded on the
PQR. This variable does not apply for any of the following
conditions:
(a) WPS is qualified with a heat treatment above the
upper transformation temperature."

Please clarify why this variable is not applied to Upper Transformation Temperature Heat Treatment.

[MW:34707] Re: Ice formation in SS 316

Hi Manish,

For Stainless steel 316 (SS316), the Ice formation can lead to mechanical and structural issues, especially in applications where the material is exposed to low temperatures.

Damage Mechanisms:

  1. Brittle Fracture: At low temperatures, stainless steel, including SS316, can become more susceptible to brittle fracture. This is a type of failure where the material breaks without significant plastic deformation. Ice formation can exacerbate this condition.
  2. Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC): The combination of low temperatures and the presence of certain corrosive agents can lead to stress corrosion cracking. Ice formation may contribute to the development and propagation of cracks in the material.

Mitigation Actions to Prevent Ice Formation:

  1. Insulation: Providing insulation to the stainless steel structure can help maintain higher temperatures and prevent the formation of ice. This is particularly important in applications where the material is exposed to low ambient temperatures.
  2. Heating Systems: Implementing heating systems, such as trace heating or electric heaters, can prevent the accumulation of ice on the surface of SS316. These systems can maintain the material at a temperature above the freezing point.
  3. Anti-Icing Coatings: Applying anti-icing coatings to the surface of SS316 can inhibit the formation of ice. These coatings are designed to reduce the adhesion of ice and promote easy removal.
  4. Thermal Blankets: Using thermal blankets or covers can help retain heat and prevent the cooling of SS316 in cold environments.
  5. Proper Design: Ensure that the design of the structure takes into account the environmental conditions it will be exposed to. This includes considering insulation, heating elements, and other preventive measures during the design phase.
  6. Regular Maintenance: Regularly inspecting and maintaining the equipment and structures made of SS316 is crucial. Identifying and addressing potential issues early can prevent the formation of ice-related damage.

BalakrR

Re: [MW:34696] Increase in soaking time

The question is generic.
To answer the query , you may refer below
For production weld PWHT, construction codes like  ASME SEC I PW 39 . ASME sec VIII DIV 1 UCS 56 are referred.
The holding time at the specified temperature range is followed  as a Minimum from respective Tables in the Codes  .
15 - 20 minutes more than minimum specified is acceptable and no issue is envisaged

Re: [MW:34693] PQR qualification with pipe & flange

Just to add, there will be some requirement in the specification such as

1. For the sour service Pipeline, each Grade of material requires PQR testing.
2. Carbon Equivalent difference
3. Each product form requires separate testing etc..

Thanks & Regards

It depends on the Code, Specification, and Application.

For eg if the Code is ASME Sec.IX and the pipe is SA106Gr.B & the Flange is SA105, then P.No & Group No of pipe will be P1 & Gr.1 Whereas Flange will be P1 & Gr.2.

If you Qualify P1 Gr.1 to P1 Gr2, then it qualifies P1Gr1 to P1Gr1 and P1Gr2 to P1Gr2 & P1Gr1 to P1Gr2.

Re: [MW:34693] Tensile test of IS2062

Yes, we can do that, as per guidelines of IS 2062 we have to retest 2 different sample selected from 2 random location,
But these 2 sample must be pass the specifications.

Reference given in IS 2062 itself.

Re: [MW:34688] Radiography for Forged valve

There are some differences between Cast & Forged products.

CAST VALVE                                                                             FORGED VALVE
1. Castings are normally associated                                          1. Except Hot shortness not much defects in
with defects and Inclusions which                                               Forgings which can be controlled.
affect the Integrity of the valve

2.  Normally no Heat Treatment after castings                           2. Forgings receives Grain refining Heat
                                                                                                        Treatment and better rpoperties.

3. No limitation on Sizes of Valves                                             3. Only smaller sizes mostly

4. Low cost                                                                                 4. Higher cost

RT is specified only to Cast valves because it is prone to Defects like Porosities & inclusion.

Thanks & Regards

Re: [MW:34684] Impact testing - V NOTCH CHARPY. Recommendation

Just to add. From your Question I assume you are using a code such as B31.3 which gives the requirement for the Material specification whether Impact testing is required based on the Job Thickness. In B31.3 there is a stress table which for carbon steels provide Grahs A B C D or the minimum temperature the material requires impact testing.

A Charpy Impact test is not required for specimen thickness less than 2.5mm.

Subsize specimens can be machined from the Pipe OD 60mm and thickness 5.5mm. Please check with the Mechanical testing lab.

Please refer to ASME Sec.IIA section SA-370.

If specimen thickness exceeds 80% during machining from the original size, temperature reduction according to the Applicable Code shall be applied.
