Re: [MW:32463] AISI 4145

Hello friends;

Was this query answered?
I am also encountering a similar problem in welding 4145tube to S355.

we are experiencing a lack of fusion on the 4145 tube side.

Preheat given 150°C
Electrodes tried E7018 and E10018
MTC attached. The tube is Quench tempered.

Any suggestions on this?

Thanks in Advance.

The hardness test was carried out during the qualification of Welding Procedure Qualification and it meets the hardness value requirement. And there are no requirements for hardness tests as per API 650. I believe that it is meant for pressure vessel tanks only, but OWNER insists on the test since it is stated in the specification. Re: [MW:32461] HARDNESS TEST

Dear Noel,

This type of situation is most of the time faced by welding and quality engineers. For this reason quality assurance activities are performed prior to product realization. In this process basically all the documents are properly reviewed  and ensured for compliance for client requirements. we must review the documents - Technical/construction specification(API 650), client specification, client additional requirements and/or any other documents. based on these documents the quality Assurance/control plan is required to be prepared and subsequently approved from clients. once this QAP/QCP approved, further requirement shall be considered as additional requirement.

Being manufacturer, you may proceed in this way

1. if you realize this is impractical at this moment, you should request for non feasible activities at this moment.

2.perform the welding procedure qualification based for critical welding parement and show the results of hardness on test coupon.based on these results request for acceptance of production weld quality  and subsequently revise the PQR/WPS if required.

3. If feasible, and time permits, cost calculation shall be performed and  submit cost implication and subsequent time constraints.

70 KSI is the  minimum UTS  of SA 516 GR 70.

So all consumables shall have 70 KSI minimum  UTS.

For said mentioned consumables in below your mail ,  70 KSI minimum  is achieved for consumables.

Re: [MW:32450] Pneumatic testing requirement

Hi,

If the test is as per ASME B31.3 the pneumatic leak test can be carried out with painting.

The standard straightly restricts insulation before testing as per 345.3.1 for all testing.

Painting before testing is not allowed for Sensitive leak tests which are described in 345.8.
The pneumatic Leak Test is covered in 345.5.

But many CLIENT SPEC RESTRICTS THE PAINTING BEFORE HYDRO TESTING.

Re: [MW:32449] Defects in welding

These are normally called Wagon Tracks or Worm Hole in FCAW and is commonly occuring.

Can be avoided by below precautions.

1. by proper storing of flux cored wires in the packed condition and covered by a plastic bag and kept in dry condition under proper humidity control.

2. by controlling contact tip to work distance. Normally recommended 19-25mm but may be increased upto 32mm. Unlike short circuit transfer, by increasing the contact tip to work distance the flux in the electrode can be preheated with increased distance and avoids this defect.

3. too low a voltage can cause worm hole porosity and can be avoided by increasing the voltage.

Thanks & Regards

Re: [MW:32448] Defects in welding

THope.this question is from India.
This is called Warm hole porosity.
This is typical surface defect of FCAW process and gets aggravated in moist environment.
Now a days there is rainy season in India .so atmosphere has a lot of moisture .
Pl specify Which brand is being used?

As I recall TASETO make wire are better when FCAW E309LT1 is used.

Re: [MW:32445] Defects in welding

Dear Gujar

Try increasing the stick out to 25 -30 mm and decrease the volts to 27 and also check the gas flow at the outlet of the torch near the contact tip if its really 15-18.

If the formulation is correct than there could be humid powders in the flux and improper lubrication could be the reason of these gas marks or pores. Also check if the wire is feeding constantly or its sleeping.

Same batch of flux cored wire E309LT1-1 has worked just fine on the other jobs with similar applications.

Sorry I got mixed up with the year of publication . This provision was incorporated in API 1104-2020 version. API terms this option as Brother-in-Law welding. See the extracts of the relevant pages. More can't be shared in a public forum. If your contract specifies API -2018 to be followed, legally you can't choose this option, as API 2018 does not address that. However, if allowed by the Authorized Inspector& and the client it's possible. Get the full version of API 1104, 2020 and get your issue straightened.

Hope this would help.

Thanks.

Dear Mr. Pradip Sir,

With all due respect, I didn't find any clause as mentioned in  6. Qualification of Welders as described by you.

Could you please tell me in which edition I should look into? As i have gone through API-1104 21st Edition/2018.

As I have to reply to my consultant with strong reference about this It would do great for me If you please help me in this case.

.Looking forward for your kind reply.

Hi Asif,

API 1104 allows this option. You should engage 2 welders max at a time.

In option 1- One welder welds the GTAW, full pass or more up to the required despot thickness , rest of the passes done by another welder by SMAW process

Option-2 Put 2 welders back-to-back, each weld half of the circumference as explained below, Both uses GTAW(root) + SMAW fill passes.

Refer Clause 6.1 of API 1104-2018, as below. However, these're the pros and cons as explained for both the welding techniques involved..

The problem one may face:-

Hope his would help you to move forward.

Subject: [MW:32434] Welder Engagement in WQT

Dear Experts,

With due respect, please read following as I am in deeply need of expert's advice:

we have established a WPS with NDT and Destructive test requirements as per API 1104 which is approved by each concerned authority of my project.

Our test coupon Dia: 30 inch and Thickness: 25.4 mm

Welding Process: GTAW+SMAW

Our client consultant wants us to do WQT as One welder will do One Joint. But We have done several projects in Gas Transmission Pipeline where we have used 02 Welders for Test pieces like this during Welder Qualification Test. It seems really difficult to engage 01 welder for 01 Joint/test piece to Qualify.

Now, our Client Consultant wants reference code or standards in writing which can establish my proposal to use 02 Multi Welders for 01 Joint/test piece during Welder Qualification Test.

Also, I want to include several SMAW welders and for that I require to engage 04 welders (02 GTAW Welders+02 SMAW welders) during WQT for 01 joint/test piece.

If possible, please help me in this issue as I don't have very much knowledge about ASME 31.8, Sec IX and API 1104. I really have to establish valid point with reference code and standards in order to do the WQT by 02 welders (GTAW+SMAW) and some joints by 04 Welders (02 GTAW+02 SMAW). I request urgent help and kind cooperation with clarification for this issue from the experts in this group.

Hoping to have all of yours kind notice and help.

Thanks in Advance,
