Re: [MW:32540] change in sfa number

There are 3 points to be considered as experts mentioned as below.

1. In ASME 2021 edition SFA 5.36 has been discontinued but I suppose the recalled may be used based provided the welding consumable certificate matches with A-Number of that Qualified for PQR.

2. Both SFA 5.20 & SFA 5.36 falls under F-Number 6 & hence  no issue.

3. Ensure the Shielding gas as qualified for 100%Co2

Thanks & Regards

Dear Experts,

I am currently working in a project which follows AWS standard. The welding design is a butt weld followed by fillet welds. Can I use rebar to fill the gap for the butt weld?. If so ,Can you please refer me to the code which allows or doesn't allow the use of rebar to fill up the gap before welding.

Thank you

Re: [MW:32526] PQR-Qualified in Duplex Stainless Steel UNS-31803 / WPS-UNS-32750

There are certain points to be considered.

1. Though both UNS-31803 & 32750 falls under same P-No: 10H / 1 but their UTS values are different. UNS 31803 welded using consumable ER 2209 which produces a UTS value of 90ksi whereas UNS32750 shall be welded with a consumable which has a UTS valiue of 120Ksi and hence preferred ER2594.

2. ASTM G48 tests are mandatory to ascertain its suitability to service, UNS31803 tested at temperature of 25degC whereas UNS 32750 tested at  40dgeC and hence suitable welding consumable to be selected.

3. Generally welds are considered anodic when compared with the Basemetal due to its area and corrosion are localized in welds. UNS 31803 has a PREN value of 34 whereas UNS 32760 has a PREN value of 40 due to its high alloy elements.

4. Moreover for Duplex and superduplex stainless steels are governed by various Clients specifications which will be more demanding and will not permit.

Hence WPS for UNS31803 cannot be used for UNS32750.

Hope our experts can add more points to clarify.

Thanks & Regards

[MW:32525] RE: PQR-Qualified in Duplex Stainless Steel UNS-31803 / WPS-UNS-32750

No, in most of the cases.

32750 is a SDSS(25Cr), while 31803 is a DSS(22Cr). For P10H group every grade is different, in chemistry, mechanical properties & corrosion resistance. You require separate PQR with all comprehensive testing for each individual grade.

What're the process requirements and intended service/s.

Re: [MW:32515] Cracking of Monel 400 TTS welds

Hi JP,
Monel being critical material from welding point of view, we have to take care of general good engineering practices like sequence of welding, proper shielding by inert gas, control of heat input, the gap (if any) between tube and tube sheets, etc. In sequence of welding try to weld the joint in multiple segments with sufficient overlaps from starting to end points. Many time the cracks develops due to minor things those are very critical to particular materials.

as per ASME B31.3  its exempted ..as thk is less than 16mm .

but if we used wps with pwht then its mandatory to do the PWHT ?

any sabic spec saying about this ??

we have socket weld (fillet weld) and Goove weld to do PWHT ..

Toughness value will be  more than Normalizing, Welding related issues will be more in QT if proper procedure is not followed.

Qualify PQR positions based on  envising Production Welding Joint positions.

For Welder , range for Qualified position is given based on WPQ tested position.

I need a clarification on AWS table 4.1 vs 4.10
As per table 4.1- for 3G position WPS shall be qualify for vertical position only
As per table 4.10 - for 3G position welder will qualify for Flat, Horizontal, vertical.

My doubt is if i have a WPS for 3G uphill position, can i use the same WPS for 1G&2G also ?
If not please explain.

Re: [MW:32505] AWS WPS & WELDER QUALIFICATION

Hai,

If your welder tested in 3G Position he can weld F,H & V Position.

3G PQR Will support only Vertical Welding.

If you need F&H position you need to establish New pqr with 2G position.
