Re: [MW:16699] MAGNETIC CHECK

Dear David:

Tell your customer to check the characteristics of the SS-316.

For this alloy, it's normal to demonstrate magnetizing effects to some degree.
SS-316 "MUST" have some amount of ferrite (i.e. around 10%) other wise
it won't fit its purpose. There is Mo in this alloy, about 2% which
causes an austenite-ferrite structure with about 10% of ferrite in
austenite background.

In addition, durig welding all grains in weld and HAZ (including
ferrite grains) will be recrystalize almost in the same direction and
this is a good amplifier for the coherent magnetic fields of the alloy
which will resond to your customer's magnet.
