Re: [MW:16675] ASTM A514 TYPE T-1

Mr. Alfy,

4140 Chemical Composition

AISI 4140 is versatile because of its simple chemistry and has the following composition:
  • 0.40 % carbon and 0.85 % manganese which offers toughness and can be heat treated and hardened
  • 0.1 % chromium adds to overall toughness but is not enough to be made into stainless steel
  • 0.25 % molybdenum and small amounts of sulfur, silicon and phosphorous.
  • Carbon  -           0.38 – 0.43
  • Chromium         0,80 – 1.10
  • Manganese       0.75 – 1.00
  • Molybdenum    0.15 – 0.25
  • Silica                 0.15 – 0.30
  • Fe                      96.77
Mechanical properties for AISI 4140 in the annealed state:

·                      Hardness           197 brn.
·               UTS                    670 MPa
·               Yield                   425 MPa
·               El. %                   15

Welding Tips:
  1. Consumables: E 9018M / E 10018M / ER 90S-D2
  2. Preheating temp. 250-3000C is sufficient
  3. Post weld HT temp for these kind of steels are generally 1100 to 1360 0 F ( 590 -740 0 C ) with min. cooling time of 1 hour per inch thick and air cooled only after 600 0F ( 3250C ) The low holding cycle provided may not help to remove full stresses formed by heat during welding. Proper cycle will help and result in reduced hardness, residual stress level, increased ductility of the weld metal and HAZ.
  4. Hence check the hardness values at weld and HAZ are as the un-released stresses may create under bead cracking either during or after welding due to thickness factor.
  5. It was not mentioned whether the job undergoes high temp. cyclic load or at normal temp applications.
  6. If you are using extra low carbon filler metal ( C – 0.03
  7.  % )  It will have enough as-welded ductility to meet the code requirements. Post heating may therefore be avoidable in some cases.
  8. As far as possible Cr-Mo steels must be pre heated, welded and post weld heated in one continuous operation to avoid under bead cracking.
If it is OK and possible the same above welding can be carried out using E / ER 312L, E / ER 309 L, E / ER 316 L  type austenitic
stainless steel filler wires also where post weld heat treatment can be avoidable. Though yield is less comparatively, this extremely
ductile metal may resist cracking due to shrinkage stresses.

There are many success stories with use of SS filler wire provided,

1. The joint does not undergo cyclic temp. in service.
2. The difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between the weld and base metal does not give raise to stresses at high (or)
at cyclic temp in service.
If required U can qualify the Procedure and do transverse tensile, bend tests, Micro analysis to check the metallurgical factors
before putting into operation.
Welding with austenitic weld metal is more common in the Petroleum Industries where more or less study temperature exists than
in Power plants where temperature and pressure fluctuations.

Dear All

Now it is clear for ASTM 514 T-A we can use 11018-M or 12018-M

But for Pushes we will use ALLOY 4140 can you tell me the specification of this alloy and what is the electrode to weld the plates ASTM 514 T-1 with this alloy 4140

Regards,
Hani Alfe

Mr. HA,

ASTM A 514  is a high-strength quenched and tempered plate for structural and pressure vessel applications.
It is also known asT-1 steel.  Consumables to weld it process wise are:

SMAW
A5.5/A5.5M-2005
E11018M or E12018M
GMAW
A5.28/A5.28M-2005
Solid electrodes ER 110S-1 and  ER120S
FCAW
A5.29/A5.29M-2005
E11XT1-K3C and -K3M
E11XT5-K3C and -K3M

Dear All

We need to fabricate one mechanical Grab plates are grade ASTM A514 TYPE T-1
Which electrode we can use for welding
