Re: [MW:16478] Clarification on ISO 15614-1

Mr. Rohit,

Butt welds qualify full and partial penetration butt welds and fillet welds. Fillet weld tests shall be required
where this is the predominant form of production welding.

In boiler / pressure parts welding  majority of joints are groove butt and few (percentage vice) are fillet type.
Any butt joint weld qualification will subsequently qualify  full, partial penetration butt as well as all fillet welds.

In structural fabrication, it could be on the reverse side,  i.e. majority of the joints are fillet type and few are of
butt (groove, sq etc. depending upon base metal thickness factors) joints.

The code is very clear. If majority of your welds are of fillet type you have to do fillet weld - macro, break tests etc.
along with butt joint qualification.

Fillet weld test qualification will also help you to check the skill of the welder, i.e., his capabilities to produce sound
weld joints with required root penetration, fusion  and without undercuts, slag inclusion etc.

sridhar.

Subject: [MW:16469] Clarification on ISO 15614-1

Dear All,
Kindly Clarify below highlighted in red fonts...what should we understand by predominant weld and how to select????....as I understand all weld carry load.

ISO 15614-1
8.4.3 Type of joint/weld
The range of qualification for the type of welded joints is as used in the welding procedure test subject to limitations
given in other clauses (eg diameter, thickness) and additionally:
a) Butt welds qualify full and partial penetration butt welds and fillet welds. Fillet weld tests shall be required
where this is the predominant form of production welding.
