Re: [MW:16458] Difference between the electrode E8018 B-8 & E8015 B-8

Dear Shridhar Sir,

Why tensile Strenth of  Low alloy Steel /LH-7018 Electrodes is higher & more than SS Electrodes 309L ???

Whereasa , SS 309L& 316L are more elongations & ductility than LH-7018 ? Why?

What should be my 1st choice i.e E309Lor E7018 while selecting electrodes for joining Single V groove /Bevel Groove
a) A216 GrA WCB Plate to A335 Cf3m Plate (not for qualification purpose , Only when we are forced to use i.e. Non-availaibilty of Consumalbes in surronding areas & in Company).

Could you Pls , explain in terms of Phsical metallurgy & Microstruture,

With Regards,
Ashish P

E 8018- B8 / E 8015 –B8 / E 8016 – B8 Low  Alloy Steel Electrodes.

All above electrodes ( formally 505 family)  have typical chemistry  of
9 Cr & 1 Mo.  And well suitable to weld ASTM grades: A182-F9, A336-F9,
A199-T9, A200-T9, A213-T9, A335-P9, A369-FP9, A426-CP9, A217-C12, and A387- Gr9. Idea for high pressure hydrogen service.

Simply put the main difference between above categories are:

8015-B8 = Low-hydrogen sodium coating  and used with DCEP
8016-B8 = Low-hydrogen potassium coating used with DCEP or AC
8018-B8 = Low-hydrogen potassium, iron powder coating used with DCEP or AC

Procedures may vary with change in position, base metals, filler metals, equipment and other changes. Preheat and post-heat recommended for all.

SPECIFICATIONS:

ANSI/AWS A5.5 E8015-B8 , E8016-B8 , 8018-B8
ASME SFA A5.5 E8015-B8 , E8016-B8 , 8018-B8
(Formerly AWS A 5.4, Class E505-15 , E505-16 , N/A FOR -18)
