Re: [MW:15926] Selection of Heat Input During Welding

Please see my answer in blue

First of all thanks for your reply. As you have referred to Table 8-1 of API RP 582 - 2001: its regarding the interpass temperature which is not a variable of Heat-Input rather than affect the heatinput.

Then, from where does the interpass temperature come?

Could you give me the reference of code or standard of The ideal heat input for commonly used welding processes lies in between 0.8 kJ/mm to 2 kJ/mm.

As  fas as I know, no code or standard specifies or restricts the heat input range.

Yes, heatinput range always supposed to mention in WPS but i need to make it.

That is what I told "As qualified"

Heat input is not a thing that you can select, rather to be controlled by means of welding Voltage, current, travel speed, electrode diameter etc.

The ideal heat input for commonly used welding processes lies in between 0.8 kJ/mm to 2 kJ/mm. The heat input that you can be used during the production welding will be  "as qualified with + or - some % variation mentioned in your PQR"

On the other hand, the interpass temperature, which should not be more than that the applicable code restricts.

Refer Table 8-1 of API RP 582 - 2001 : Welding Guidelines for the Chemical, Oil, and Gas Industries, for recommended interpass temperature of various materials.

Dear Expert,

Good Morning
1.       Could anybody tell me what should be the Heat Input (kJ/mm), during Welding, for the following material Carbon Steel (e.g. ASTM A-106 Gr-B), Low Alloy Steel (e.g. A335 P11, P22), Stainless Steel (e.g. A312 Tp 304L, 308L, 316L, 321)?
2.       How to select the appropriate Heat Input for a certain material.
