As per your comments about using RT instead of AUT for dissimilar metal welds, Olympus NDT has done some development work on AUT for inspection of DMW. Nobody is claiming that DMW are easy to inspect, but RT really has major issues with DMW. The attached paper gives guidelines on how to set up a valid AUT inspection program.
There are a number of steps, with the first step being to use standard shear waves, then longitudinal waves, then dual probes, then finally TRL-PA. In addition, practical work was performed on actual DSW samples in service (see the ASNT paper).
