PW-41.2.2

The depth of weld measured between the inside surface of the weld preparation and the outside surface of the pipe or tube shall be not less than the minimum thickness permitted by the applicable material specifications for the particular size and thickness of pipe or tubing used.

PW-41.2.3

When the wall is recessed for a backing ring or to assure a uniform inside diameter of the weld preparation, the depth of such recess shall be so limited that the remaining net section of the wall is not less than the minimum required thickness.

PW 52.3.3

Dear Sir, I dont find
52.3.3 clause in 2010 edition, it may be 52.3.2, but is a clause for UT.

I am concern about RT, where it is mentioned in PW-51.3.2, t is the thickness of the weld.


I think, all the above clauses concludes that the thickness of the weld should be at least the thinner of these two abutting thicknesses, but this still it does not conclude that reinforcement is considered in definition of weld thickness or not.

Surprisingly in VIII Div I, it is clearly mentioned that, t = the thickness of the weld excluding any allowable reinforcement. For a butt weld joining two members having different thicknesses at the weld, t is the thinner of these two thicknesses.

Is there any ASME interpretation for the same ?

If you read carefully PW 41.2.2, PW 41.2.3 and PW 52.3.3, the two definitions (in VIII-1 and I) are practically the same, since section I is using the term "resulting weld thickness including reinforcement".
"Resulting weld thickness is one thing" and "weld thickness is an other thing"
