Re: [MW:14797] MMA Welding Electrode Problem

1. Rutile coated SS electrodes like SS 308-16 may require re-drying (re-baking) at
250-300 deg.C for one hour,  if it is suspected to have picked up moisture in the
flux coating, resulting in porosity during starting.

2. It could be due to use of substandard chemicals used in the flux mix.You can call the
supplier, explain to him of the problems and ask for replacement if required. (or)

3. The  electrodes of first category could be commercial grade, sold at half the rate of
normal type and do not give good finish & x-ray quality during welding. These type
are used for structural welding applications and not recommended for butt joints..

Subject: [MW:14739] MMA Welding Electrode Problem

Dear Sir
I have two plates of SS 304 having thickness of 8mm single V edge prepared for butt weld when I use 2.5mm MMA electrode of SS308-16 on horizontal position it gives very poor profile during root pass and porosity at the start of electrode. when I use electrode of some other brand it gives good root profile. It means there is some problem in electrode and I have to solve the problem. I used 65-70 Ampere for both electrodes. Guide me what is the problem with 1st electrode and how this problem can be removed?
