RE: [MW:14579] Water Pump in Oil & Gas industry / Cast Iron

Hi Vino,

Please see the guidelines of MR-0175 below. The acceptance of ASTM-A-395 Cast Iron is subject to clients acceptance. Some organizations' specification may outrightly reject this material(see the attached hyperlink). It may be good idea to seek the clients justification and go for the  alternative.

If the application is not for sour service , then there should  not be any issue for rejection of this material. However an answer from the client would definitely be of help.

Thanks.

A.2.4 Requirements for the use of cast irons

A.2.4.1 General:- Grey, austenitic and white cast irons shall not be used for pressure-containing members. These materials may be used for internal components if their use is permitted by the equipment standard and has been approved by the equipment user. Ferritic ductile iron in accordance with ASTM A395 is acceptable for equipment unless otherwise specified by the equipment standard.

A.2.4.3 Compressors and pumps Grey cast iron:- (ASTM A278, Class 35 or 40) and ductile (nodular) cast iron (ASTM A-395 ) are acceptable ascompressor cylinders, liners, pistons and valves.

5.9.5. Cast irons and ferritic ductile (nodular) irons e.g. ASTM A 395 are unacceptable for pressure-retaining parts and for impellers etc. The use  of these materials for non-pressure, low-stressed components shall be subject to approval by TLM. Austenitic irons are also generally unacceptable for pressure-retaining parts.

>Dear Experts,

One of our leading Client has rejected the Centrifugal Water Pump on the basis that Cast Iron is not acceptable in Oil and Gas industry.
The Cast Iron has been used for Casing and Impeller, Material: ASTM A395 Gr 60-40-18.
The Design Code for Pump is ASME(Form A2).
Purpose: This pump is a used for cooling the oil for the Cylinders of a Gas Compressor.

Moreover. the requirement that Cast Iron is not acceptable is not specified in Client Standard/Specification.

I request all experts in this subject to through more light and let me know if you require any further inputs.

Appreciate to see quick response.

Thanks & Regards
Vino - Doha

Re: [MW:34105] SA266 GR4N 4 Cycle SPWHT

Hi,  You are correct, Minimum refers to the one cycle for which this part will expose until final work shop PWHT. hence mill test certificate shall include this.  Max. SPWHT, refers to additional cycles of heat treatment that are reserved for future repairs during equipment lifetime.  Again, these simulated no. Of cycles shall be specified in MTC.  The idea is we need to make sure that steel mechanical properties are not compromised upon exposure to multiple repairs (i e 4 cycles in your case).  One could say, if steel is subjected to 4 cycles and is ok, then it should by defacto be good for one cycle, yet, this is wrong assumption cause mechanical problems and microstructure of materials varies accordingly based on no. Of cycles for which material will expose. This is apparent in alloy steel and especially for impact test values as an example.  In your case, this forged CS with properties before PWHT can be understood to be " as forged" condition (i.e. Wit...

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
