Re: [MW:14554] USE of PQR of GTAW+SMAW for new WPS GTAW process only.

Hi Friends ,

As per ASME-IX QW-451.1 Table,

as per your ( Praveen Nakwal ) below mail info, the PQR Plate thk is 8 T and GTAW-3mm, SMAW-5mm deposited weld thk. ( t )  in PQR,

If PQR is 8T, then the base metal range qualified in WPS 1.5 to 16 T,

Also in WPS, GTAW weldmetal thk of Max 6 mm and SMAW of Max 10 mm is accepted.

So, there is no problem to weld by using GTAW for 2, 3, 4 mm BM thk., can write a separate WPS with GTAW only.

You can have 3 WPSs from this PQR, 1WPS for GT+SM combination,  1 WPS for GTAW only with Purging Gas, 1 WPS for SMAW only with backing plate or double side welds.

For lower thk basemetals in job, use lower size filler metals to avoid high current. For 2 mm plate, better use 1.6 dia GTAW filler with the parameters recommended by the manufacturer.

But ensure that, U have given Purging Gas for SS during PQ test, should be followed in WPS and job welds.

Also refer ASME-IX QW-200.2 (f)  Multiple WPSs With One PQR / Multiple PQRs With One WPS.

Hope it helps.

Cheers,

Here is the answer for you as per ASME QW-451
1.the applicable range of thickness of BM is 1.5 to 6mm
2.the applicable range of thickness of Weld Metal is 0 to 6mm

Dear Sir,
Unable to clarify as it is not mentioned whether the PQR is qualified on a groove joint or fillet joint. Also it is not clear that the new WPS proposed to be supported by the PQR qualified is meant for welding groove joints or fillet joints.

>Dear Experts,
Can we use S.S to S.S 8mm base metal thickness PQR of GTAW (3mm)+SMAW (5mm) for the making for new WPS of S.S to S.S with GTAW only, with 2mm base metal thickness only ?

Waiting for reply..

Re: [MW:34105] SA266 GR4N 4 Cycle SPWHT

Hi,  You are correct, Minimum refers to the one cycle for which this part will expose until final work shop PWHT. hence mill test certificate shall include this.  Max. SPWHT, refers to additional cycles of heat treatment that are reserved for future repairs during equipment lifetime.  Again, these simulated no. Of cycles shall be specified in MTC.  The idea is we need to make sure that steel mechanical properties are not compromised upon exposure to multiple repairs (i e 4 cycles in your case).  One could say, if steel is subjected to 4 cycles and is ok, then it should by defacto be good for one cycle, yet, this is wrong assumption cause mechanical problems and microstructure of materials varies accordingly based on no. Of cycles for which material will expose. This is apparent in alloy steel and especially for impact test values as an example.  In your case, this forged CS with properties before PWHT can be understood to be " as forged" condition (i.e. Wit...

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
