| Dear Deepak, This is with reference to QW 217 of SecIX, clause (a) & (b) as well. The WPS shall be supported for either of the two cases; i.e. when cladding is considered in design calculations and also when cladding is not considered in design calculations. As per you if I am considering the thickness of the shell (i.e P No. 1) and thickness of internal (i.e. P No. 8) for developing a WPS, then it wont be appropriate as I will be ultimately welding SS internals to cladding (i.e. P No. 8 to P No. 8). Hence this creates a doubt for me and hence I am looking for a clarification regarding the same. It would be great if we have some kind of asme interpretation for that clause which can make the case more clear. |

Dear Mr. Prashant,
For welding of internals, you need not consider cladding thickness as cladding thickness is not meant for any structural strength but only for necessary protection. You should consider thickness of the shell and thickness of internals only. Please let us know, the type of activities / job and application you are carrying out.

Hi All,
My query is as follows:
Shell thickness is 100 mm and material grade is SA 516 Gr.70. There is 6 mm SS316L Weld Overlay on Shell done with ESW process using a qualified WPS. After PWHT of the vessel, there are some SS316L internals are to be welded on the cladding done in the shell. Types of the joints considered on the cladding are Groove & Fillet welds.
Consider the two cases:
a) Suppose the cladding thickness is considered in the design calculations.
The WPS used for supporting the welding of the internals on the cladding after PWHT shall be supported for the combined thickness of shell and cladding & thickness of internals or shall consider only the thickness for cladding & thickness of internals?
b) Suppose the cladding thickness is not considered in the design calculations.
The WPS used for supporting the welding of the internals on the cladding after PWHT shall be supported for the combined thickness of shell and cladding & thickness of internals or shall consider only the thickness for cladding & thickness of internals?
Do we have any ASME interpretations for WPS/PQR of such groove welded joints coming on the cladding portion of the shell?
Thanking you,
Rgds,
Prashant
