Re: [MW:10897] Paint repair procedure

It is case by case, depend on gasket type, because the roughness of contact gasket surface will be smooth.
Check also client requirement for gasket contact surface.
Anyway, better you ask to paint maker how to clean such type of paint.

Thank you

RE: [MW:10895] Comparison of Large Dia Flanges (B16.47 series A & B) in Refinery services

Dear Krishnakumar,

I addition to below valuable information here are some more important points to consider.

1) For process piping ( services you mentioned) normally Series A flanges been used. Series A flanges are heiver in weight with more no of bolts and in continuation of ASME B16.5.
2) For CWS you can use series B flanges since they are compact and light weight and hence more economical.
3) For the compatibility purpose you need to check existing flanges series.

Please do not mix series A flanges with Series B flanges, otherwise it will be a big mess. Hope the above information will be helpfull for you.

Regards.

Dear Mr Krishnakumar,

To standardize the pipe flanges for sizes NPS 26 to NPS 60 for class 75 through to Class 1500 ASME B 16.47 was developed . At that time it was decided to include the flange dimensions as per MSS SP 44 flanges except Class 75 which are ASME/API 605 flanges. Since the dimension of these two classes of flanges were not compatible with each other it was decided that  MSS SP 44 flanges are B 16.47 Series A flanges and  API 605 flanges are designated as B 16.47 Series B flanges.

Standards followed:

  • ASME B 16.5 : UP TO SIZE NPS 24
  • ASME B16.47 SR.A / SR.B : UP TO SIZE NPS 60 (for rating150& 300)
  • AWWA C-207 : UP TO SIZE NPS 144 (without Hub) & UP TO SIZE NPS 96 (With Hub) - Pls. refer this standard while giving reference of this for any size.

[MW:10893] QW-404.6 of sec IX

Dear experts,

I have checked all the tables in sec IX; no where mentioned QW-406.6 as essential variable or essential variable.

But in page 69 in sec IX it states that A change in nominal size of electrode or diameter specified in the WPS. I couldn't understand this statement. Can somebody explain me please?

[MW:10892] Diameter of electrode-reg

Dear Experts,

While my routine inspection of welding I have noticed Diameter of the electrode used for the capping was not as per the qualified WPS and I was told the diameter of the electrode is not an essential variables.

  WPS for SMAW

Now as per the sec IX; Table QW-253

1) the essential variable QW-404.30

2) Supplementary variables QW-404.7/.12

3)  Non essential varaiable QW-404.6

       &
as per the QW-353

1) QW-404.15/.30 were the essential variables for welder qualification.

So if the diameter of electrode used in production welds beyond 6mm then only the WPS
needs to be re written? or Should we insist the welder to use what ever mentioned in the qualified WPS? or the welder should use the electrode that he used while performing his WQT.
Can somebody expain me in details how to deal this?

Re: [MW:10889] Duplex Claded Eqipt PWHT

Dear Mr.Hegde,

You have not specified composition of overlay -22 Cr or 25 Cr.
The DSS overlay and subsequent PWHt at 600 Deg.C is not advisable primarily for Alfa Prima microstructure which is likely to form in this temp. range. Corrosion tests ( G 48) and Hardness test may reveal this. However it is difficult to take out sample for G 48 test with 3 mm overlay on CS.

Probable solutions-

1) Incolloy 625 overlay instead of DSS.
2) Carryout PWHT after completion of overlay after first pass and overlaying other passes after PWHT.
3) Carryout SSC/SCC test with Simulation heta treatment for the process conditions as stated in NACE.

Re: [MW:10886] RE: 10879] Duplex Claded Eqipt PWHT

I have one more point to add
after cladding, sometime you may find cracks . But these cracks usually do not extend upto the base material and usuallydo not propogate during service.
Therefore there usually is no need for PWHT.

Dear Mr. Hedge,

When executing PWHT at 600 °C your corrosion resistance will be reduced because of the formation of Sigma phase (FeCr precipitates) in the microstructure of the cladding. Sigma phase can occur in the temperature range from 450 °C – 850 °C so if you will discuss lowering the PWHT temperature you should go for 400 max. but I would choose to propose withholding PWHT and take care of controlling welding parameters during production.

You may propose executing portable MicroVickers hardness tests after weld completion in order to demonstrate no high hardness values are present at the HAZ near weld surface.

Most important is to convince your client to withhold PWHT because of the corrosion resistance of the cladding. When client insist on any kind of stress relieve treatment you perhaps can convince them to use high frequency hammering of the cap layer and HAZ. This will introduce compressive stresses in the surface up to 2 mm instead of the tensile stresses present after welding.

Re: [MW:10886] Inconel 625 overlay on AISI4140

Dear Venu,

The maximum allowable hardness at any location on welded surfaces, after final machining shall be less than 35 HRC for Ni-Cr-MO-Co (Inconel 625).

Please confirm with vendor regarding PWHT but usually required with this alloy, assuming Weld qualification in accordance with ASME Sec ix, following are the aspects to be considered while reviewing WPS/PQR:-

-No limit on max. deposit thickness qualified- No worries in your case
-Base metal thickness range (1" to unlimited)- No worries in your case
-for processe depositing a weld bead width greater than 1/2 in. wide, the weld overlay shall consist of a minimum of three weld beads in the first layer.
-When a chemical composition is specified in the WPS, chemical analysis specimens shall be removed at locations specified in QW-462.5(b) or QW-462.5(e). The chemical analysis shall be performed in accordance with QW-462.5(a) and shall be within the range specified in the WPS. This chemical analysis is not required when a chemical composition is not specified on the WPS.
-A change in the UNS number for each AWS classification.
-Position and Diameter is supplementary essential variable.
-Liquid Penetrant testing (colour contrast)- Surface Indications (1.6 mm) maximum rounded or linear).
-5X visual examination of cross sectional macro: (0.8 mm) max length of linear or rounded indication).
-Chemical Composition (Weld overlay cladding shall conform to ASTM B424 UNS N08825.

Should you have further query, feel free to post again.

[MW:10883] RE: 10879] Duplex Claded Eqipt PWHT

Dear Mr.

Dear Friends

I have a query about The Duplex  cladded E quipment having base material SA 516 Gr70 of 50mm thk and clad of Duplex (3mm )

The eqipment require to undergo PWHT at 600C The Joint is clad restored by Duplex weld

i) Does the PWHT at 600C will affect  the Corrosion properties of Duplex weld (Corrosion test like IGC,Pitting corrosin, etc  as per GS8)

ii) If yes do we require to carry out PWHt at lower Temp.

RE: [MW:10882] acceptance standards for pittings for SA 516 GR 70 Plates

I believe the depth of the pitting should not exceed 10% of the nominal wall thickness viz the manufacturing tolerance.

There is a tolerance for the thickness for the recied materials in Sec VIII div 1, I think that is 20% of PO thickness. Please verify, I donlt have the code with me now to specify the paragraph.

I think, we can accept the plate if the remaining thickness after removing the pitting area, by gtinding and actual thickness check, is meeting the design thickness including CA, we shall not remove the CA from the acailable thickness as this is the new project material. we shall not go upto the CA (normally this will be 2 to 3 mm).

[MW:10877] RE: 10751] Reduction in thickness-micro biological attack

Hello Anup,

MIC attack is very common in the industry. Would  you please elaborate on the scenario, e.g:- service, materials of construction and other aspects noted. MIC can be minimized a number of ways. Also reduction in pipe thickness could be alarming if it service is severe, and goes close to the required design thickness.

Feel free to get some basic information at this link:- http://events.nace.org/library/corrosion/Microbial/Introduction.asp

If it is for new construction, then you can check the minimum thickness, If it doesn't meet your PO or thickness requirement then you can reject the plates, the supplier should have fix the pitting on their side and done all NDE required.
