RE: [MW:9609] heat input calculation in welding

From an ASME Section IX Code stand point the below statements are not correct.

 

On should read the Section IX, QW-409.1, interpretations (there are quite a few).  In particular one should Interpretation IX-81-91.  However, I will transcribe portions of several interpretations that are interesting:

 

IX-81-19

Q4 – “If QW-409.1 does not require that average heat input be determined” {previous question – reply No} “how is heat input established for multiple pass procedure qualification?  Must it be established for each pass?

R4 – QW-409.1 requires requalification when an increase in heat input occurs over that qualified.  Maximum heat input is established during procedure qualification by determination of the maximum amperage and voltage in combination with the least travel speed or, alternatively, the maxi mum volume of weld metal deposited per unit length of weld.  Heat input is not required to be determined for each pass.

 

IX-04-12

Q1 – Does QW-409.1 require the highest heat input, to be recorded on the PQR, be calculated on the parameter used at the location where the HAZ impact specimens are removed.

R1 – No.

 

Although, I will admit I record amperage, voltage, and travel speed for each pass when performing PQR welding whether impact testing is required or not;  i.e. whether QW-409.1 is an essential variable or not applicable.

Dear Sandeep,

As stated by you that "every pass has its effect on base metal", Your PQR shall include heat input for each pass and WPS to be written with Heat Input for each pass, as per QW-409.1, any increase in heat input for each pass will require requalification.

Heat input shall be calculated with QW-409.1 (a) and (b), if with any of these methods Heat Input is increased, you need to requalify the WPS, that's why max. heat input value is written for WPS.

Hi,

There is no code specify the shelf life of electrode, its depends on
the manufacturer recommendation.

I had also faced the problem with Lincoln electrodes certificates, as
they mention in the lot certificates in 1 year. So raised the quarry
in Lincoln Company about the shelf life of electrode; accordingly they
send the warranty/validity certificate (Here I attached the attached
warranty/validity certificates & lot certificates -for your
information)

So when ever you face the shelf life problem with electrode kindly
contact the manufacturer and get the validity confirmation from the
company. its the only record or proof of electrode shelf life and
solution.

               PMI  is technique for fast identification of materials. When it is used for accurate measurements of chemical composition, problems arise. If you observe the standard deviation beside the reading, you may understand the reason for this variation. In XRF, the reading is given by the electron signal generated by the incident X-rays, so during X-ray irradiation the number of electrons removed may vary for each reading taken; the detector noise may also affect the reading. As a precaution, please use the PMI at max. temp of 40°C beyond which detector has more noise signal.

I had Witnessed a PMI test on Material 34CrNiMo6 The Cr. % obtain 1.3 to 1.4, After Machining the Rod and Heat treatment and temparing the same material is tested fore PMI and found Cr.0.98 to 1.2 Percent.The Cr. % become less by 0.1 to 0.2 %. Can any body tell what may be the reason.

                 I would like to know that base on previous projects qualified PQR says that Argon Gas purity 99.90% but requirement is 99.996%.Main things is gas is essential variable So I want to use this PQR.During preparation wps, can i  purpose argon purity is 99.996%

[MW:9605] Re: How to select equivalent grade material? A36 equivalent??

Hi
At the first,it is important that the mechanical properties of chosen
material be the same,
the yield point and the tensile point of A36 is the same for all
thicknesses, But there is a little difference about the material
(Specially sheet metal) that is categorized by EN 10025 like s235
becuase the yield point of the s235 that is similar to A36 (almost)
is going down when the thickness is going up but the issue that is
very important is the Design assumptions.
I can send you the summarized properties of the materials if you want
but the final decision must be taken by the designer and accorting to
design assumption.

Dear Saamy,
 

1- Flange material shall be selected based on service conditions (fluid properties such as corrosiveness, temperature, hydrogen contents,...).

2- Based on design pressure, design temperature and material of construction the flange rating shall be selected according to pressure/temperature rating tables of ASME b16.5.

Based on my long experience on this matter I found that working with pressure/temperature rating tables of ASME b16.5 is not so easy and accurate. So I converted these tables to the graphs which is in attached as a pdf file for your convenience.

IT MAY BE DUE TO Cr MAY NOT HOMOGENEOUSLY mixed or while you tested
that spot might be different than this spot some variation or first
reading may not correct or this reading. You may recalibrate the PMI
machine. Or you may go for other machine and also go for chemical
analysis.

Pl. browse the reply already given in earlier thread - MW:4205 :

It’s true that boiler or pressure vessel codes or structural welding codes do not specify the shelf-life or expiry dates of welding electrodes.
For example, ASME Nuclear Codes Sec-III, Clause & NB, NC-2440 specifies that:- Suitable storage and handling of electrodes, flux, and other welding materials shall be maintained. Precautions shall be taken to minimize absorption of moisture by fluxes and cored, fabricated, and coated electrodes.

The shelf-life of welding electrodes to a great extent depends on electrode manufacturer’s methods, quality control procedure and how electrodes are handled. Depending on the coating type, packing (hermetically sealed or not), storing methods and ambient conditions, humidity etc, electrodes may last long or less. However as a good practice and based on electrode manufacturer’s guidelines it may be worth considering:-

· Solid Wires, GTAW/GMAW-No shelf Life.

· Cored Wire –FCAW- No shelf life

· SMAW – The rule should be FIFO (First in First Out). Electrodes where the coating shows sign of flaking, cracks etc certainly should be discarded without much thoughts. Electrodes not older than 2-3 years but in good condition may be used. If required the diffusible hydrogen test could be repeated. Electrodes older than 3 years generally should not be used as a good engineering rule.

· SAW Fluxes- Shelf life 2-3 years maximum subject to the flux condition and amount of fine particles/dust generated and behavior during welding.

Pl. browse the reply already given in earlier thread - MW:4205 :

It's true that boiler or pressure vessel codes or structural welding codes do not specify the shelf-life or expiry dates of welding electrodes.
For example, ASME Nuclear Codes Sec-III, Clause & NB, NC-2440 specifies that:- Suitable storage and handling of electrodes, flux, and other welding materials shall be maintained. Precautions shall be taken to minimize absorption of moisture by fluxes and cored, fabricated, and coated electrodes.

The shelf-life of welding electrodes to a great extent depends on electrode manufacturer's methods, quality control procedure and how electrodes are handled. Depending on the coating type, packing (hermetically sealed or not), storing methods and ambient conditions, humidity etc, electrodes may last long or less. However as a good practice and based on electrode manufacturer's guidelines it may be worth considering:-

· Solid Wires, GTAW/GMAW-No shelf Life.

· Cored Wire –FCAW- No shelf life

· SMAW – The rule should be FIFO (First in First Out). Electrodes where the coating shows sign of flaking, cracks etc certainly should be discarded without much thoughts. Electrodes not older than 2-3 years but in good condition may be used. If required the diffusible hydrogen test could be repeated. Electrodes older than 3 years generally should not be used as a good engineering rule.

· SAW Fluxes- Shelf life 2-3 years maximum subject to the flux condition and amount of fine particles/dust generated and behavior during welding.

You are correct definitely we can not get El 46% but we can get YS and
TS with base metal matching by that way it will pass in TS and
naturally it will pass impact at -10 deg C so PQR will be passed.

You mean to say that the PQR when qualified should meet or exceed the
actual values mentioned in the MTC and not the minimum specified for
the base material (X65).

I think such a requirement is very unusual, you can match the strength
part, but I think its going to be a difficult task in locating a
consumable to give you 46% elongation.
