Re: [MW:13211] MPI for the copper inclusion

Hello Mr. Manpreet ,

Thanks ,

yes this is not the SS material and it is API 5 L ( CS) .

further in this regards , we check this area with Radiography and as well MUT also , but it's not giving any indication of crack of inclusion.
could you shear your thought on that , and if there is copper inclusion which may be cause of cracking , how much it is effective for the life of pipeline and how much content of the copper is acceptable in the weld.

Hi,

Hope, materials employed is not SS type 316/316L, in this case please conduct metallographic examination         ( STD AS 2038 Intergranular Corrosion in Austenetic S.S) and perform PMI, Leaking samples could be observed through Dye penetrant method.

Copper in small amounts can cause cracking problems. While some companies use copper backing, it is usually in conjunction with mechanized welding systems where the welding parameters can be controlled to prevent melting the copper backing or allowing the arc to impinge directly against the copper.

If you were to have a problem with copper contamination, it would most likely be evident by very small cracks in the  contaminated area. A dye penetrant test or fluorescent wet magnetic particle test with an AC yoke will provide a positive means of locating cracks caused by the copper or other means.

You could also polish the area of concern and etch the weld (root). If copper is present, it will be obvious once the area is etched. AWS B2.1 can be used as a source of information of the types of etchants to be used with different metals.

Subject: [MW:13189] MPI for the copper inclusion
Dear Expert ,

Need your advice on the below matter ,

we are going the GMAW welding with copper backing , and found some copper pick up in the Root surface and check with the AUT and found no indication .
for the more clarification of the effect of the copper , we grind of the copper from the surface and check with the MPI and found some hire line indication and check with the LPT found NO indication.༯div>

I have one clarification , as we know that Copper is non magnetic material and during MPi if we checking and finding such indication it must be copper inclusion instead of crack because its not appearing.

Please advice if making any mistake.༯div>

Re: [MW:34105] SA266 GR4N 4 Cycle SPWHT

Hi,  You are correct, Minimum refers to the one cycle for which this part will expose until final work shop PWHT. hence mill test certificate shall include this.  Max. SPWHT, refers to additional cycles of heat treatment that are reserved for future repairs during equipment lifetime.  Again, these simulated no. Of cycles shall be specified in MTC.  The idea is we need to make sure that steel mechanical properties are not compromised upon exposure to multiple repairs (i e 4 cycles in your case).  One could say, if steel is subjected to 4 cycles and is ok, then it should by defacto be good for one cycle, yet, this is wrong assumption cause mechanical problems and microstructure of materials varies accordingly based on no. Of cycles for which material will expose. This is apparent in alloy steel and especially for impact test values as an example.  In your case, this forged CS with properties before PWHT can be understood to be " as forged" condition (i.e. Wit...

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
