Dear Mr. Lenin and friends,
Clause 5.(b) of UW-11 is applicable , when designer considers joint efficiency - full (E = 1.0 ) for the joint.
In any given condition, wall thickness derived considering joint efficiency E = 1.0 ,( hoop stress, circumferential stress), for longitudinal joint (category A) joint will be sufficient for joint efficiency
E < 1.0, for category B, C joint.
So, for Full Radiography, all category A joint shall be full radiographed and category B and C joints, which interacts with category A joint shall be spot radiographed .
Please note that category B and C joints must be radiographed additionally based on the joint efficiency considered. ( either E = 0.9 or the case may be) .
Further, this clause is more important in case of joint efficiency of seamless head /section
As per 12(d), UW- 12, if seamless section/ head is welded with shell section then, circ -seam must be spot radiographed, if designer has to consider joint efficiency of seamless head /section, E = 1.0 . If the seamless head / shell section is welded with shell and cir- seam is not spot radiographed , then joint efficiency for seamless head / section can't be taken as E = 1.0
With Best Regards,

As per my understanding UW 11(a) 5(b), radiography of T joint in not a code requirement. Usually it is mentioned in project specification.

Dear All,
Pl.update the the following.
ASME Sec VIII Div.1 ,2010 Ed,W-11,5(b) ,Category B or C butt welds
(but not including those in nozzles or communicating chambers except
as required as above) which intersect the Category A butt weld in
vessel sections or heads or connect seamlesss vessel sections or heads
shall,as a minimum, meet the requirements for spot Radiography in
accordance with UW-52 .Spot radiographs required by this paragraph
required by this pragraph shall not be used to satisfy the spot
radiography rules as applied to any other weld incremet.
Is this explains about T joint RT requirement?
Thanks in Advance.
