Due to heavy thickness PWHT is mandatory, 1st butter CS flange with 1 or 2 layers of ER309 and do PWHT, this avoids PWHT that might sensitize Austenitic SS to intergranular corrosion.
After machining and inspecting the buttered layer, you can use conventional SS welding mthod.
In case of elevated temp.Inconel is used.

Good Day to Group members,
I have to weld SS316 64 mm thickness pipe to Flange A105 64 mm thick by Double bevel weld, Code requirement API 1104 latest edition / ASME Sec IX requirement, Can you tell me SMAW & SAW process which cl-assification electrode can use for this joint, Any Buttering requirement using E309 Electrode on carbon steel side before welding with E 316 electrode, What preheat temperature & interpass temperature maintain during welding. Please share your experience & Give suggestions to get good quality weld.
