Looks like the method adopted for PMI was spectroscopy, that's why "C" content is available in the analysis. Spectroscopy tells you the material composition but may not be effective in identifying material.

Try PMI with Niton.The XRF technique will not detect "C", but other elements would be detected. In addition each state of art Niton machine will have an in built data base.This helps to indentify an unknown alloy, i.e Niton analyses the result to loaded data base and try to match the results to the nearest grade. You may discuss the same to the NDE organization before performing the test.

The attached articles ( highlighted texts) explains the equipment and it's functions. We've the similar equipment (handheld XRF) , every analysis comes with the nearest match available in the Niton Equipment.

Another option can be used after performing Mechanical testing which can give tensile strength from which we can guess in which grade it is falling???

I mean if its strength above 60,000 psi then it can be consider as A307 Gr.B while chemical composition will tell its grade.

Are there any markings on the head of the bolt or the end of the bolt? If you have marks they can be traced to what it should be.

Hi, You are correct, Minimum refers to the one cycle for which this part will expose until final work shop PWHT. hence mill test certificate shall include this. Max. SPWHT, refers to additional cycles of heat treatment that are reserved for future repairs during equipment lifetime. Again, these simulated no. Of cycles shall be specified in MTC. The idea is we need to make sure that steel mechanical properties are not compromised upon exposure to multiple repairs (i e 4 cycles in your case). One could say, if steel is subjected to 4 cycles and is ok, then it should by defacto be good for one cycle, yet, this is wrong assumption cause mechanical problems and microstructure of materials varies accordingly based on no. Of cycles for which material will expose. This is apparent in alloy steel and especially for impact test values as an example.
