[MW:12646] FW: 12641] use of E 8018 C1 for welding SA 537 CL1 Material

SA 537 CL 1 is “ P no. 1 Gr. No. 2” PRESSURE VESSEL PLATES and it is normal CS plates with min. strength 70 KSI

E8018 C1  is a 2.5% nickel-alloyed electrode suitable for the welding of low-alloy steels with impact requirements down to -60°C. The composition of the weld metal is such that good, low temperature impact properties are obtained, even when welding vertically up. The weld metal of E8018 C1  is also noted for its good corrosion resistance to sea-water and sulphuric acid fumes.

E 8018 G is a basic electrode with very good welding characteristics. E 8018-G type and yields a weld metal alloyed with about 0.9% Ni. It meets the impact requirements down to -50°C. The coating is of the low-moisture absorption type and the diffusible hydrogen content is below 5ml/100g weld metal.

For welding issues I do not find any problems for using 8018 C1 but I think it is more than required , I prefer to try with 8018 G

You must check the service fluid of this tank with your engineering department

Dear All

Greetings.

Tank of base material SA 537 CL 1 is being under fabrication as per code API 650.

Can we use E 8018 C1 for welding SA 537 CL 1.( thickness 42 mm)

Please suggest.

Thanks & Regards
