Re: [MW:12095] PWHT on ASME U Stamped Pressure Vessel with SS316 internals

We have welded several vessels with the same thing. as long as you have a WPS covering your welding (i.e. P1 to P8 Stress Relieved) then you're OK.. Is it you in-house QC rejecting it? He probably should know your procedure before he joined your company as an inspector or he might not even know anything at all.

Dear Sirs,

Thanks for your inputs,

@Karthik: It is not having cladding. Yes, your are right they are worried about the chemical properties after PWHT. And it is 24" SCH80 Vessel, after PWHT again doing welding and again PWHT will be a time consuming job. So we have done the welding without any pads inside. This is our current situation.

@Budi: I will rise this point to our QC and let me check what further we can do.

@Ramin: For one vessel we have welded an internal and we carried out welding before PWHT. Now again cutting and removing is a difficult Task.

Thanks & Regards,
Vijay

Dear Vijay:

  • Remove internals,
  • weld an internal ring (same material as the shell) to the vessel (later you will weld internals to this ring),
  • carry out PWHT on vessel without internals and then
  • weld the internals to that internal ring...

This way, after PWHT, there has been no weld on shell (un-heat treated welds are on internal rings).

Good luck

Dear Experts,

We are in big trouble. We need your inputs for our problem which we
are facing now.

We are fabrication a pressure vessel with ASME U stamp. In that vessel
some internal of SS316 materials are to be welded. The size is 24".

My question: Can we do PWHT of Loading Temp @425 Deg. C and Soaking
Temp @610-630 Deg.C of 51 mins Soaking time.

Is there any code requirements for PWHT for SS internals???

We got approval from Client design team PWHT with internals and we
proceeded the welding also based on their confirmation.

Now, our QC is not accepted this method. We are in deep trouble.

Kindly clarify.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Vijay
