[MW:12178] RE: 12177] Welding of ASTM A148 Gr 90-60

Dear Prem,

Problem with this material is that material specification doesn’t specify anything else than Phosphorus and Sulfur content. If nothing is agreed in front it’s up to the manufacturer to choose the chemical composition in order to reach the required mechanical properties. Same problem you have with heat treatment condition because this may be Annealed, Normalized, Normalized and Tempered or Quenched and Tempered if nothing is agreed in front.

Therefore it would be advisable to remove a small part of material in order to determine chemical composition in front of welding activities.

ASTM A148 does mention welding of its castings in paragraph 12 so normally it should be a weldable grade but to be sure you need to know the composition, or you may go for the worst case situation. In that case I would recommend preheating up to 150 °C and using SG3 wire as filler metal for GMAW welding process.

According to ASTM A148 you have to execute a suitable stress relieve or heat treatment afterwards. Here you also need to know the delivery condition.

It would be helpful for you if there is a reliable certificate available which shows the necessary information.

Met vriendelijke groeten / Best Regards

Onderwerp: [MW:12177] Welding of ASTM A148 Gr 90-60

Hi Friends

I need to rectify a casting @ 100mm thick with weld buildup @ 100 X 100 X 25mm localised area.

The MOC is ASTM A 148 Gr 90-60 which is a high strength steel casting having UTS: 650 MPa.

Does anyone have any exposure of welding such castings.

Is ASTM A 148 Gr 90-60 a weldable grade and welder friendly ?

What should be the preheat and interpass temp.

Can i get some technical literature on weldability of ASTM A 148 Gr 90-60.

Regards
