Re: [MW:11798] UT TESTING MIN. AND MAXIMUM THICKNESS FOR PIPE .

Hi Aplesh,

By using you can detect al low thickness as 8mm and as high as 150mm, this depends on frequency and the technique used.

By using Tandem technique, you can inpect pipe upto 2-8mm thickness.

Generally Pulse-Echo method is used as it is very simple to use but require skilled persons to perform and evaluate the results.

1st step is to check the frequency of your instrument, mostly 2.5 to 5 MHZ is recommended, 2nd  step is to check what thickness you want to inspect depending on thickness probe is selected (for parent metal- normal probe and welded part- angle probe)

There are diffrent calibration procedure for different range of thickness (refer SA 577- standard specification for Ultrasonic Angle Beam examination of steel plates)

Ultrasonic examinatio is performed in accordance with a written procedure which shall as minimum contain the requirements listed in Table T-421 (ASME Sec V), also refer  T-434.3 (Article 4, ASME Sec V) for piping claibration blocks.

Article 5 is for UT inspection of parent Materials, Article 4 is for UT UT inspection of welds.

Manpreet Singh
