Re: [MW:11782] Welding of SA 516 Gr.70

I do not have specific technical reason on why you use SMAW with E7018 and then back grinding? Is there any technical requirement from Client? assuming that there is no restriction (no specific requirement) and your PQR is qualified per ASME Sec IX, you can go with full SAW (shell to shell and head). Typically pressure vessel weld joint preparation is single V. This means you no need either E7018 or E7010 for its root. Filler: EM12K (F.no:6, A.no:1). obtain approval from client at first.
Many of the contractors I monitored used full SAW for shell to shell and head. Full SAW is your option.

Mr. Fitria Rahman,

So far we are following SMAW+SAW with the following varaiable

First two pass with E7018 followed by SAW using the filler EM12K after the completion of one side, back grinding then SAW using the filler EM12K  ,we are getting good quality weld by this procedure, but the cost and time is seems to be very high .Can we avoid back welding by using the electrodes with good penetration like E7010 ?  Is it have any further alternatives available for us..?

Regards

Rinshad A
