RE: [MW:11736] LNG Tank Material selection

Hello Limesh,

I had posted a reply earlier to the similar query, which is reposted FYI. In addition the two other attachments ,one from Bohler Thyssen- on the very  minute details of 9% Ni steel welding & the other paper from Arcelor, 9% Ni steel base metal would explain the pros and cons of this alloy and it's welding problems.

As explained earlier there are a number of ways to weld this grade of steel. In  order to get  a matching impact properties in the weld as well as the matching strength , austenitic welding consumables have to be tested to the limits.

What're the design requirements , e.g. design temperature , impact properties/lateral expansion requirements  and the grade proposed for fabrication.

Appreciating your response.

  • By the way to the best of my knowledge, ASTM-A844(9% Nickel steel , is yet to be incorporated in ASME Sec-II ,Part A Code. I am referencing up to up to July ,2010.

Dear Nagarajan,

Thank you for the information and the the time you had taken to review my query. However, I couldn't find A No.5.11 for the corresponding electrode in ASME BPV SEC IX.I think A No:5.11 would be SFA No. of electrode and typing error might have caused the problem. Please correct me,if I am wrong.

Dear All,

What is the material normally used for LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) tank fabrication?

I got some information that 9%Ni steel is OK(Still,I am not sure the authenticity of this information).

Apart from 9%Ni,any other material suitable for cryogenic application?

Actually what is this 9%Ni steel?

What is the correct designation of this 9%Ni steel in ASTM?

Regards,

Limesh
