[MW:11751] RE: 11695] Using 10018-G Electrode replacing 9018-G in WB-36 Material with out qualifying PQR.

Hi Jose,

WB-36  is not an easy steel to fabricate. It could  crack in thick section , if the selection of welding consumables is highly overmatching. The ideal welding consumable should be in 90 Ksi range.

Sec-IX, QW-404.12(f), allows a change of welding consumable, without requalification as listed " from the classification qualified to another filler metal within the same SFA specification when the weld metal is exempt from Impact Testing by other Sections ". But this change is subject to a good judgment call of the welding engineer also.

I would think a change from E-9018G to E-11018G should not be done without qualifying a new PQR , or without doing a mock up.You should  perform hardness  readings across the cross section, in addition to SEC-IX tensile and bend tests..  E-11018G electrodes are highly overmatching and cracking could an issue, especially for feed water lines where the thickness could be easily over 1.5 inch.

Hope this recommendation would help you.

Subject: [MW:11695] Using 10018-G Electrode replacing 9018-G in WB-36 Material with out qualifying PQR.

Dear Friends,

We have a qualified PQR for WB-36 Material using E 9018-G material and we are using it in site. Now a vendor is supplying us 10018-G which is more available.

Can I use 10018-G instead of 9018-G without qualifying PQR.I think in both cases essential varialbles are same....

Also Is there any problem in using 9018-G instead of 10018-G without qualifying PQR....

Regards,
Jose
