So many parameters has to be considered for preheating requirement, few of the elements are listed….

1.      Carbon equivalent.(generally for more than 0.4 %)

2.      Carbon percentage(Generally for more than 0.3%)

3.      Higher thickness(generally 25mm and above)

4.      Any stress relaxation for the stress developed in fabrication / weld preparation.

 

And also preheating will also increase weld ability to a small extent, uneven thermal stress in higher thickness material etc..

ASME SEC VIII – preheating part has attached for your ref…

And also it will provide guide lines for preheat requirement for various group materials,(thickness and carbon % will vary material to material)
