Re: [MW:10966] UT & PAUT is allowed on 7.2 mm thk PIPE

Hi,

I assume you are dealing with ASME code, which stear you to Article 4 of ASME Sec v. this only ask to use "Pulse Echo Technique" so basically you can use any of them (UT or PAUT).

However if code being followed is Australian code, it says "

Welds made by GMAW welding should be examined with mechanized ultrasonic testing" so this ask for PAUT only for the specified reason.

For Longitudinal welding, it's better to run PAUT which can detect defects in the range of 6.4 to 52mm, a generaic idea, some advancements might have occured.

Section VIII Division 1 UW-11(a) (2) call for full radiography of all butt welded joints with nominal thk exceeding 38mm and welds in nozzles exceeding 29mm wall thk.

Should you have further query, feel free to post.

Dear all,

Please clarify my below mentioned queries,

Can we use  Manual UT or PAUT (PHASE ARRAY ULTRASONIC TESTING) for finding defects in 18" API 5L X65 ,7.2mm thickness pipe. The pipe is longitudnal welded. We have to scan the only on the longitudnal seam.

Please confirm, weather the code permits to do UT on this thickness,if any code says please send me the details.

Also please clarify,if any code restricts the UT to any thickness limit(MIN/MAX)

If anyboby need more details, please ask me...
