Re: [MW:10946] Diameter of electrode-reg

Hi,
QW404.6(Non-essential variable as per QW253) specifies that,If there is any change in the diameter of the electrode as specified in the WPS.It means if there is no Impact requirement, change in diameter of the electrode is a Non essential variable. So In your case there is no restriction as per the code specification, if there is no Impact requirement .you can use any diameter of the electrode.

If there is a Impact requirement,as per QW253 it shall be refer to QW404.7(Supplementary essential variable) - it restrict to use the electrode diameter not more than 6mm.If the diameter of the electrode greater than 6mm shall need qualification.

Thanks & Regards,

(Karthik)

Dear Ilangkumaran,

Mr.Pandithan is Right
Electrode Diameter is a Supplementary essential variables means Applies only when there is a Impact Requirement.
Otherwise deviation of Electrode diameter from the qualified WPS is not a problem as per ASME IX

It is always use small electrode to avoid more heat input and for slang inclusion

Dear Experts,

While my routine inspection of welding I have noticed Diameter of the electrode used for the capping was not as per the qualified WPS and I was told the diameter of the electrode is not an essential variables.

  WPS for SMAW

Now as per the sec IX; Table QW-253

1) the essential variable QW-404.30

2) Supplementary variables QW-404.7/.12

3)  Non essential varaiable QW-404.6

       &
as per the QW-353

1) QW-404.15/.30 were the essential variables for welder qualification.

So if the diameter of electrode used in production welds beyond 6mm then only the WPS
needs to be re written? or Should we insist the welder to use what ever mentioned in the qualified WPS? or the welder should use the electrode that he used while performing his WQT.
Can somebody expain me in details how to deal this?

Regards
Ilangkumaran
