RE: [MW:10406] Reciprocating Compressor / API 618 /Query

Kindly  mention KW Rating for your compressor.

As per API 618 :

Reciprocating compressor crank case it self can be used (in most of the cases as per Mfr. Standard) as a Lube Oil Reservoir and a separate tank is not required.

In your case why Separate LO Tank is used ?? Is it Client / ITB Requirements ?

As per API 618, The basic Lube Oil system shall be in compliance to para 6.14.2.4 see below

6.14.2.1.4 The basic oil system, in accordance with 6.14.2.1.2, shall contain, as a minimum, the following components:

a. reservoir—typically the compressor crankcase;

b. main oil pump—(materials in accordance with 6.14.2.1.5) which may be shaft-driven or motor driven;

c. auxiliary pump, when required, in accordance with 6.14.2.2;

d. single cooler (see 6.14.2.3);

e. dual filters (see 6.14.2.4);

f. heater—when required (see 6.14.2.5);

g. pressure relief valve for each pump (see 6.14.2.6);

h. single regulator for control of delivered oil pressure (separate from relief valves);

i. single regulator for oil temperature control (see 6.14.2.7);

j. valves—material shall be carbon steel with stainless steel trim;

k. oil piping—shall be stainless steel pipe and fittings (with the exception of cast-in-frame lines or passages); or stainless steel

tubing and fittings (see 6.14.2.1.8);

l. The following instruments:

— one pressure indicator;

— two temperature indicators;

— one level indicator (on the crankcase or reservoir) (see 6.14.2.1.9);

— one pressure transmitter for low pressure alarm and auxiliary pump start;

— one low frame oil level transmitter for alarm;

— one filter high differential pressure transmitter for alarm;

— one pressure transmitter for low pressure shutdown.

See Figure G-5 for a typical schematic drawing of a lube-oil system.

If Lube Oil system is required as per API 614 (Special purpose or general purpose) in that case a separate Lube Oil reservoir is required but, API 614 does not specify compliance to API 650 for Oil reservoir.

Subject: [MW:10403] Reciprocating Compressor / API 618 /Query

Dear Experts/Advisers in Compressor Manufacturing,

I would like to know what should be the design Code for the Lub Oil Tanks in Compressor?

The Supplier is referring to their own Manufacturing Standard stating that this is just a Atmospheric Tank and if Cient insists then there will be Cost and Schedule impact.

The Client is insisting to use any International Code and Supplier to provide Calculation for the same.

Query.

1. Does API 618 refers to Lub Oil Tank, if so, which Section of API 618?  Also advise the Code of Construction,Inspection and Testing.

2. If API 618 does not refers then which International Code should be referred?

Hope to see as usual response from every corner.

Thanks & Regards

VPV - Doha

Re: [MW:34105] SA266 GR4N 4 Cycle SPWHT

Hi,  You are correct, Minimum refers to the one cycle for which this part will expose until final work shop PWHT. hence mill test certificate shall include this.  Max. SPWHT, refers to additional cycles of heat treatment that are reserved for future repairs during equipment lifetime.  Again, these simulated no. Of cycles shall be specified in MTC.  The idea is we need to make sure that steel mechanical properties are not compromised upon exposure to multiple repairs (i e 4 cycles in your case).  One could say, if steel is subjected to 4 cycles and is ok, then it should by defacto be good for one cycle, yet, this is wrong assumption cause mechanical problems and microstructure of materials varies accordingly based on no. Of cycles for which material will expose. This is apparent in alloy steel and especially for impact test values as an example.  In your case, this forged CS with properties before PWHT can be understood to be " as forged" condition (i.e. Wit...

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
