Re: [MW:10302] Can I use E 7018 in Pipe root runs? What's the disadvantages?

Fixed position pipe welds using E-7018 for root pass is a very difficult due to the iron in the coating.  When a low hydrogen root pass is required, many use an E-7016 electrode which does not have iron in the coating.  I have used the 7016 electrode many times.  My favorite 7016 to use is the Kobelco LB-52U.

E-7018 is universally accepted low hydrogen electrode, helping many welding engineer and welders to produce quality welds. However for pipeline welding , especially for root passes, this electrode has some limitations. In our electric utility we do not perform a lot of cross country pipeline welding. But there're some such pipelines for  carrying natural gases, to fire in the boilers.Field welding  and desired quality of such piping's may not be easy always.

There're some practical welding issues with E-7018 for root passes, e.g less digging arc, which may cause inconsistent root penetration, greater slag volume  and less friable slag, which is  sometimes difficult to move. Generally our experiences is with E-7010 root +E-7018 filling passes.

The attached product of Bohler looks promising. Feel free to dig up more information and I'm sure some members from BTW would be more than happy to help you further in your queries.

Thanks.

I suppose it requires highly skilled welders to get uniform root penetration which could pass Radiography testing. For Piping it is normal practice to use GTAW for the Root Run & Next pass, & for remaining passes joint can be completed using SMAW E7018

Hi All,

Can I use E 7018 in Pipe root runs? Wats the disadvantages?
Can i go E 7018 root run& filler WPS qualification?
