Re: [MW:9828] RE: 9758- Titanium procedure

Mr. Gaswami,

Thanks so much for the reply and information. This was new news to me and very helpful. I ended up doing a revision to my original procedure. The revised procedure was submitted and approved.
Thanks again for the much appreciated and helpful information.

Hi Doug,

To the best of my knowledge SB-337 is more in ASME Sec-IX code from 2001 onwards. ASME Sec-II, deleted this material from the approved material list and also ASTM withdrew this material and replaced the same with B862(see attached).

As you know welding  Titanium requires extreme care and as  you have an existing qualified procedure on Titanium im place and I would think the following would be prudent:-
  • Do a thread bare comparison of both the specifications (B-337 & B862) and find their equivalence.
  • Should any equivalence be established, then it would be appropriate to put up a request with your local jurisdiction/ inspection agency concerned.
It the above is not possible, it would be wise to qualify a new procedure.

Note : Titanium group is 51,52,53, each group is not the same , there're numerous alloys approved by ASME Sec-IX. Thus the qualification should be within the same P No.

Thanks.

Subject: [MW:9758] Titanium procedure

Need help ,
I have in place, a procedure to weld titanium using, P51 to P51 base metals(B-337 GR2) and  ERTI-1 filler metal. I need to be procedurally qualified to weld B862-05 GR2 material.
If the one I have is not sufficient, please advise me on what I need to do.
