Re: [MW:9432] buttering on weld edges

Dear Mehta

 

Buttering weld is procedure to rectify wide gaps (root openings) greater than those permitted by AWS D11 (normally found in tubular joint in structural connection) and/or client specification, but not greater than 19 mm or twice the thickness of the thinner part, whichever is lesser. Procedure shall be qualified.

Any body can explain me why we do buttering on weld edges of similar materials before welding .
