The design of the self reinforced branch connections (or olets) is compensating for the metal removed to make opening from header pipe, where the largest stress concentration would otherwise occur. Hence you must consider the thickness at crotch (hatched cross section in the below fig) for qualifications

Subject: [MW:8643] Thickness calculation for weldolet
Hi,
How do we calculate the thickness of the weldolet for welding
procedure qualification? Code is B31.3 and ASME SECIX. Weldolet is 8"
SCH40 Bonney forge. So is the thickness (B-C)/2 ie 21mm? Does the
procedure qualification has to support base material thickness of
21mm. The pipe is 8" SCH40. Which section of B31.3 or SEC IX would
address the requirement for this attachment weld between pipe and
weldolet?
Thanks for your help.
