Dear Joshi Jaydeep,

I don't have the latest interpretation to match the corresponding clause. But, I think the following interpretation is still useful. But still confusion remaining, some of the seniors in this forum supported(old posts) the theory that diameter is an essential variable as per API 1104 for PQR.

The essential variable list in Section 2.4 for Weld Procedure Qualification does not cover diameter groupings although Welder Qualification Tests do have groupings. Is it correct in saying that qualifying a procedure on 2" diameter would qualify, say, a 40" diameter butt weld provided all other essential variables were met?

Yes.

Dear all,

Is Pipe diameter is essential variable for the Welding Procedure qualification as per API 1104 ?

The following clause of API 1104 Welding procedure qualification says that Diameter and thickness shall be identified as per 6.2.2 but under the title '5.4 ESSENTIAL VARIABLES', diameter is not mentioned.

Clause no. 5.3.2.3 Diameter and wall thickness

Does the above clause mean that Diameter grouping is to be considered while qualifying procedure?

Please advise.
