Xe is not used due to unavailability.

In TIG, how can Carbon di oxide be used?doesn't  it react with oxygen to give carbon monoxide and nitrogen to give cyanide??
 
Also, why is the tungsten elctrode alloyyed with thorium?
 
Why only Radon and not Xenon as the inertgas?
