Re: [MW:8189] Weld Macro examination

Hi

Macro examination is mostly carried out at 5X to 10X magnification to assess the internal weld quality.
The magnification will depend upon your client specs. / applicable code.

If your PQR is as per ASME Sec.IX, then please refer following clause:
QW-453, Note 8.

QW-453: PROCEDURE/PERFORMANCE QUALIFICATION THICKNESS LIMITS AND TEST
SPECIMENS FOR HARD-FACING (WEAR-RESISTANT) AND CORROSIONRESISTANT
OVERLAYS
Notes(8): The base metal shall be sectioned transversely to the direction of the hard-facing overlay. The two faces of the hard-facing exposed by sectioning shall be polished and etched with a suitable etchant and shall be visually examined with ×5 magnification for cracks in the base metal or the heat affected zone, lack of fusion, or other linear defects.

>Dear members,

I've a question about Macro examination in

PQR's. What is the minimum magnifcation level we need to have? ,is

there any reference standard/specification .

One of my client spec syas it must be x5 .I have come across with

various PQR review this magnification level is varying a range from

x2.7 ,x3.4,x4.0&x5.0.

Also is there any significance in referring the letter in small

case(x5) or Caps(X5)

Any one can put your expertise in this regard.
