[MW:8250] Re: Repairs to the Aluminium Cylinderhead of a Vintage Car

Dear sir,
There are two methods possible for repairing the head 01)by spray
metalizing in case of ARC /flame spray of the metal the base metal
temp DOES NOT go above 100-120dig C ( max)
In fact the base metal is only cleaned mechanicaly and not heat in put
is given to it You can built up up to 100microns to 1 to 2 mm ( ned to
check the techno -economics ) which can be further machined to the
desired size.
Other solution is very much conventional and can be used only to seals
holes i.e. soldering the face
The solders are available in paste ( preferably for furnace
applications as were used in car ac and other pipe soldering) as well
as rod form specially for repairs and on hand applications
but in this case you need apply heat to the job and if the heat added
is more than required (175 to 180 digC) then the solder is not proper
or higher amount of heat may open the other holes also.

The material is cast Aluminium and being a vintage car, replacements are not available. Cutting the present cylinderhead for making moulds for casting not acceptable to owner due to the risk of losing the cylinderhead for good ! We have described the problem and seek advice about Probable Solutions.
