[MW:8234] Tensile test specimen

Dear peers,
I need some information regarding the shape of the Tensile Test specimen.(As per ASTM A370)
When we are doing the tensile test, why we need to take the sample in the form of Dumbell or Shouldered specimens?
Is the shape is only for the grip purpose?

Thanks and Best regards
