Re: [MW:7778] MW: 7740- Requirements for welding of A517-Gr.B

Hi

I have welded SA517 material in past and thickness more than 20mm also.
We had used E11018M for SMAW and ER110S-G for GTAW.

Preheat, interpass temp, optimum welding parameters, controlled heat input and control on diffusible hydrogen for SMAW consumables plays a key role in getting radiographic sound welds.
If you want detailed info. then drop a line to me.

Hi Kianoush,

Attached are someguidelines on A/SA-517
steel. This steel is a Q&T steel contains various alloying elements
(different grades have different compositions). Welding of this steel would
require a precise control of heat input and welding parametersand
correct selection of welding electrodes.

Generally there's no electrodes of exact matching
chemistry for this steel. However if I have to make a choice , the preference
would be either E-9018/10018/11018M SMAW electrodes and matching GTAW,
GMAW and SAW filer depending on the process and extent of
fabrication involved.

Many fabricators may prefer E-9018/10018/11018G
(General Low Alloy Steel) electrodes, but if the desired chemistry is specified
beforehand,so thatthere would not be any later
surprises?

What's the design code ? For fabricating A-517 steel
one has to incorporate strictly the design code
requirements.

Let me know if the attached information helps you or
not?.

Thanks.

Dear All,
Is there any experience on welding of A517-Gr.B with thickness up to
20 mm?

Thanks,
