Purge gas is for preventing the oxidising of molten weld metal during root weld of stainless steel.at high temperature Cr combines with Oxigen and forms Cr2O3 which reduces the resistance of weld to corrosion. When the purge gas is used this reaction can not be happened. But the purging gas is required to use during hot pass to in case any burn through occurs during hot pass. regards, Elshan.
