Dear,

In process pipe work normally GTAW,SMAW and SAW are preferred. It doesn't mean that GMAW is forbidden. But many clients not much interested in GMAW process on their pipe work due to it's poor performance history. But one reputed main contractor approved this process(Automatic GMAW) for root and hot pass welding for thin walled mega bore(one person can easily walk through) carbon steel pipes for their air seperation Unit project.RT result of the welded joint was poor. Welding contractor's QC has no time to sit inside his office.Luckily I got a chance to see all defects (Thanks to God and the main contractor,It was a good experience for me).The thin walled pipes fit up was the major problem, even the mismatch goes upto 6 mm.The same process was used in heavy walled CS pipe spool fabrication in another project and the radiography result was good.In this case the fit up was too good.

GMAW - Handle with care especially in pipe work.

Regards,

Limesh

Agree with Karthic – the use of GMAW and FCAW are simply to speed up and cheapen the work ! – Bang goes the quality – Stick to the TIG as far as possible at roots.

You can use GMAW no problems

Use Metalloy Wires it is give good reuslts with the proper WPS/PQR

for CS Pipes u can use Metalloy 76 i attached the data for you here (Before it was Metalloy 71)

if u need any more pls contact me

Hi,

Normally GMAW is not allowed in piping and pressure vessel welding because of the more weld defects even which cannot identify in RT.

But With proper application and appropriate parameters, excellent welds can be produced using short-circuit GMAW.  However, if the welder is not careful to follow established procedures, a number of serious weld defects can occur.

The most significant of these defects is lack of sidewall fusion; the molten puddle of metal does not fully fuse with the pipe sidewalls, and a "cold lap" defect occurs.  This is a significant structural defect that is difficult to identify with commonly used nondestructive inspection methods such as radiography.  So while the GMAW and FCAW processes have gained popularity for many applications, they have not been considered serious options for most pipe welding operations.
This poor reputation is no longer deserved, however.  Continuous development in both power supply and consumable technology have made this process a viable alternative to manual GTAW or shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) of pipe.

Thanks & Regards,

(Karthik)

Our contractor want to use GMAW process inplace of GTAW+SMAW
for cS pipe butt weld joint. Construction code is B31.3  . Can we quaLify OR use GMAW  inplace of Gtaw+ smaw process. Pressure is 15 kg/cm2g with full RT. Pls advice?bscribe from this group, send email to materials-welding-unsubscribe@googlegroups.com
