[MW:7533] RE: 7532] Expanding Alloy 20 Tubes

John

Without going into detail in this mail it is my experience over years in the desalination and power industry with heat exchangers we must carry out the welding BEFORE expanding.

To ease this activity as the tubes will be loose in the tubeplate we would lightly expand only initially to snug the wall onto the plate – we then seal weld or revere weld depending on the pressure application.

After the welding we can fully expand as intended.

Ref the expansion activity – We can only assess the required torque ranges and wall reduction requirements by carrying out pull off / push off tests – we keep the wall reductions low to avoid cracking – accompanied by a detailed expansion method statement for the work.

Can we also assume the tube entry side has a taper?

Mail me if I can assist any more.

We are going to use Alloy 20 tubes in a heat exchanger,we will expand approx 200 mm length into grooves and then seal weld.
We have been told expansion is difficult, has anyone had any experience of this procedure.
