[MW:7399] MW:-7396 Welding of LTCS cast to SS 316 Plate

Parviz,

I do not have the applicable EN standard for welding procedure qualification, i.e. EN ISO 15614.Hoewever this standard is a redone version of EN 288 Part 3  with significant changes. In one of the earlier email Mr Karthik explained the groupings of base metals for procedure and performance qualification as per EN-/ISO-15614.

As far as the procedure qualification between P8 to P1 base metal is concerned a separate procedure qualification is to be done  involving P8 (TP 316, Subgroup 8.1) to P1 base metal. A/SA 352 LCB material is designed for impact down up to -460C (-500F). As the design temperature may involve subzero, for both P8 and P1 base metal group no would become an essential variable(check EN-15614 in details).

E/ER-309/309L or Inconel-182/82 are commonly preferred weld consumable for such dissimilar joints. If weld is intended to low temperature service as above , you need to be careful about consumable selection. Asking for impact test on the consumable MTR would be a good idea.

Meantime the attachment would be of help to you.

Thanks.

Subject: [MW:7382] Fwd: Welding of LTCS cast to SS 316 Plate

Hi there,

We have a situation, our Valve contractor want to weld jacket material which is plate stainless steel TP316 European standard to LTCS cast material ASTM A 352 LCB standard. The reference welding code will be European standard. We asked for WPS, and they provide us WPS for CS to CS material, & SS to SS material accompanied by PQR, but WPS for LTCS to SS material. We asked for LTCS to SS material WPS and PQR, and they replied that within European standard they never used such WPS. My question is, "Is this answer is acceptable?", what I know according to ASME Sec IX, for wach welding type we should have exact WPS and PQR, otherwise is not acceptable.

Could you please help me on this.

Thanks & Regards,

Parviz
