Re: [MW:6965] Impact requirements

Mr. Rakesh,
Impact test is the process of imparting a high energy blow, to a specimen with standard dimensions. This is used to replicate the ductile-brittle transition of metals, plastics, etc. When the energy is below a specified value, it means the material cannot withstand the energy at that temperature. So if that material is used in service it may lead to catastrophic failure, at some temperatures the material may just crumble even without external energy.
The impact requirements are such that, if you require service temperature of say 0°C, you have to get it tested at lower temperature say -20°C, just to incorporate safety factor.

Dear friends,

Can anyone explain me the concept of impact testing? how to check if impact testing requirments apply for materials am using? and if impact test requirements are appliacble what are the testing requirments? if i have to use any materials which falls below -29 deg c, impact requirments will apply, am i right?  please guide me.
