[MW:7088] Re: WPS FOR ASTM A-487-4D Casting

Dear Shrinivas,

I don't know if you have a copy available of this specification but
there are some guidelines given in the specification regarding
required preheat temperature and Post Weld Heat-treatment.
You need to preheat the material min. 100°C because of its high
Carbon Equivalent >0.65 (Max. 0.30 %C / 0.40-0.80 %Cr / 0.40-0.80
%Ni / 0.15-0.30 %Mo).
For larger thickness's (>30 mm) I would suggest a minimum Preheat
temperature of 150 °C.
Post Weld Heat-treatment need to be executed at a minimum of 620 °C
but you have to take care that this never will be executed at a
temperature higher than the materials final tempering temperature.
I can't advise any filler metal and welding parameter, for this I
should say contact your filler metal supplier.

Regarding ASTM A487 you always have to perform Non Destructive
Examination on the weld preparation (Magnetic Examination) as well as
the as welded condition (Magnetic and Radiographic Examination.

I hope this will help you further.

Best Regards,

Herman Pieper
