[MW:7027] MW: 7016- SS 316L Pump casing Nuts/Bolts Material

Hi Nilesh,

What’s the intended application of these pumps, for upstream (oil and gas production,) or for downstream (oil refining application)?

It’s my opinion that MR 0175 will apply for the first environment and MR -0103 will apply in the second environment.

MR-0103 Bolting materials are as below:-

ASTM A453 Gr.660-UNS S66286 is accepted by MR-0175- Part-3(CRA and other alloys) subject to the following condition(Table- A-26). This bolting material is of very high tensile strength (precipitation hardening stainless steel). See the scope from ASTM standard for this material:-

This specification (A-453) covers four grades of bolting materials with nine classes of yield strength ranging from 50 to 120 ksi [345 to 827 MPa] for use in high temperature service such as fasteners for pressure vessel and valve flanges. The material requires special processing and is not intended for general purpose applications. The term “bolting material,” as used in this specification, covers rolled, forged, or hot-extruded bars; bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, and stud bolts. Headed bolts and rolled threads may be supplied.

I’ve attached an intersting  article on MR-0175, read Page -5 on ASTM A453 Gr.660-UNS S66286 material.

Hope this would  help you.

Thanks.

Subject: [MW:7016] SS 316L Pump casing Nuts/Bolts Material

Dear Members,

I have come across a problem related to selection of Material for Pump casing Nuts/Bolts due to the following TWO diff. cases.

We have few Pumps in SOUR Service + Non Sour Service (With NACE MR 0175 requirements applicable in Both the cases) in SS 316L Material. These Pumps are Axial split. Pump Casing material is A 351 CF3M.

·         One Vendor has selected Pump casing Nuts/Bolts as per API 610 Table H.2 (Bolts : A 193 Gr B7M & A 194 Gr 2HM) : (In this case SOUR Service is not applicable , But NACE MR 0175 is applicable)

·         Second vendor selected Bolts Material A193 Gr B8M but, now they want to replace with ASTM A453 Gr.660, in accordance to what specified in NACE MR0175. (In this case SOUR Service  + NACE MR 0175 is also applicable)

Expert please share your opinion.

Regards,

Nilesh.

Re: [MW:34105] SA266 GR4N 4 Cycle SPWHT

Hi,  You are correct, Minimum refers to the one cycle for which this part will expose until final work shop PWHT. hence mill test certificate shall include this.  Max. SPWHT, refers to additional cycles of heat treatment that are reserved for future repairs during equipment lifetime.  Again, these simulated no. Of cycles shall be specified in MTC.  The idea is we need to make sure that steel mechanical properties are not compromised upon exposure to multiple repairs (i e 4 cycles in your case).  One could say, if steel is subjected to 4 cycles and is ok, then it should by defacto be good for one cycle, yet, this is wrong assumption cause mechanical problems and microstructure of materials varies accordingly based on no. Of cycles for which material will expose. This is apparent in alloy steel and especially for impact test values as an example.  In your case, this forged CS with properties before PWHT can be understood to be " as forged" condition (i.e. Wit...

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
